The Sumerians (from around 4000 BC) not only really got the wheel rolling, they also developed irrigation systems. And not just for arable land: they were probably the first to discover the straw, then made from dried rye straw.

In 1888, their invention was patented by Marvin C. Stone patented his invention. Stone produced paper tubes for cigarettes and expanded their range of applications to include drip-free drinks. And today, drinking straws are available in a wide variety of shapes, colours, lengths, with or without a bend, with a built-in spoon, with individual lettering - there are virtually no limits to the imagination.

The only thing that has changed fundamentally since the time of the Sumerians is the material. After rye straw and paper, thin-walled plastics such as polyethylene or polypropylene are now mainly used. Stainless steel or shatterproof glass versions are also in circulation, but plastic straws offer a clear hygiene advantage, especially in the catering sector.

There are many myths surrounding the drinking straw, but there is no truth in the theory that you get drunk faster if you drink through a straw - at most, there is a placebo effect. But the straw does help to protect the teeth, as it guides sugary drinks past the teeth.

Even the Guinness Book of Records has an entry or two on the subject: for example, the Brit Sam Heath made a chain of 26 soap bubbles - with the help of a drinking straw. And the official world record for holding straws in the mouth at one time is currently 264.
